Ways To Cut The Cost Of Car Insurance

Ways to Cut the Cost of Car Insurance

Car insurance is a cost that every driver has to swallow, and it can be particularly expensive if you’ve only just passed your test. Thankfully, there are a few ways that you can save money on your car insurance through discounts for insuring multiple cars, staying accident-free, and even getting good grades.

Accident Free Discount

This accident free discount is a bit of a slow burn, as you won’t see the benefits for a couple years, but many insurance providers will offer up to a 15% discount for remaining accident free, lowering your insurance bill (eventually) and motivating you to drive safely.

Defensive Driving Course Discount

Certain insurance providers will offer a discount to drivers who have taken a defensive driving course. Defensive driving courses help to build a set of driving skills that allows drivers to defend themselves against, among other things, possible collisions caused by bad drivers, drunk drivers and poor weather.

Away From Home College Student Discount

If you are moving away from home to attend college and don’t plan on taking your car with you, then it’s a good idea to ask your insurance company if they offer an “away from home college student discount.” These discounts are provided on the basis that your car will effectively be off the road while you are at college and, therefore, much less likely to be involved in an accident.

Good Student Discount

As weird as it sounds, getting better grades can get you a better deal on your car insurance, and it is not just because you’re getting better at accounting. Many insurance companies offer discounts of between 10% and 25% off their standard rates for students who are academically successful. The best part is that these discounted rates last after you leave college and can last until you are 25.

Multiple Vehicle Discount

If you come from a home with multiple cars, you could be in line for a significant discount if you insure them through the same insurance company. If Mom and Dad already have a car each and they’ve just bought you one to learn to drive in, then it might be a good idea to contact your insurance company and see how having them all insured by the same company affects your insurance rates. Some companies will also offer further discounts if you have other insurance services, like home or life insurance, with them in addition to your car insurance.
