Legal Requirements for Applying for a Driver's License: What You Need to Know

Have you ever wondered what to do to get a driver’s license? Having your license is an exciting milestone, but there are factors you should be mindful of. Each state differs, so it is a good idea to research the requirements in advance.

From age limits to mandatory documents, these steps will save you time and make the process easier. This article will break down the legal requirements you must meet to obtain your license without confusion. So let’s get started!

Meet the Age Requirement

First, you want to make sure you meet the legal age requirement. Most states allow you to apply for a learner’s permit at 16 to 18 years of age. The learner’s permit will enable you to practice driving with a licensed adult in the car. When you have practiced enough, you can apply for a full driver’s license when you are 18 years old, depending on your state. Because each state has its rules, you need to check the age requirement for your residence.

Take a Course in Driver’s Education

Most states require new drivers to take a driver’s education course before getting a license. These classes will teach you many critical rules of the road, safe driving practices, and what to do in certain driving situations.

Driver’s education can involve classroom lessons or behind-the-wheel practice. Northwest Driving School has instructors that will make learning both fun and easy. A good driver’s education course will make you feel confident and prepared.

Written Knowledge Test

You must obtain, in writing, a test of your knowledge of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices before taking this driving course. Don’t sweat because the test is easy if you study! Most states will have a handbook or online resources with which to prepare.

Practice Enough Hours

When you already have your learner’s permit, the next thing is practice. Most states call for a certain number of practice hours which you must accomplish before applying for a full license. For example, in most states, you must have at least 30-50 hours of practice, including 10 hours at night.

This shall be achieved by practicing with a licensed adult, such as a parent or instructor. The more practice you get, the more confident and safe you will be on the road.

Driving Skills Test

Now that you have completed your hours of practice, it is time for the driving skills test. It is now time to drive safely and follow the rules on the road. There will be an examiner seated with you inside the car, giving instructions such as:

  • Starting and stopping smoothly
  • Turning and use of signals
  • Parallel parking
  • Following signs and signals

Take a deep breath and focus. Remember, this test is just an opportunity to show what you’ve learned. If you’ve practiced enough, you’ve got this!
