Defensive Seeing HabitsPosted on Jan 21, 2017 by admin| Blog

There are two defensive seeing habits that need to be developed for optimal safety:

  1. Looking ahead as it gives you time and space for decision making and vehicle control.
  2. Continuously scanning as it allows you to see all of the important information going on around your vehicle as you move along your intended path of travel.

Ground scanning is also essential for being a safe and defensive driver. Ground scanning has two substantial benefits:

  1. It will allow you to know when another vehicle is going to change lanes.
  2. You will be able to observe pedestrians standing in-between parked vehicles so extra caution can be used if the pedestrian steps into oncoming traffic without warning.

Vision

When driving a vehicle, eyes don’t tell drivers what they see; drivers should tell their eyes what to look for.

We have two types of vision and they each do a different job.

  1. Central vision is narrow and allows you to see details and judge the speed and distance of other vehicles.
  2. Peripheral vision allows you to see objects, movement, and shades of dark or light to the side of you as you drive.

As your speed increases, your peripheral vision decreases.
